Sophie Wotton
Mezzo Soprano Sophie Wotton is a Developing Artist with Opera
Queensland. She will play the role of Third Spirit in their 2008
production of The Magic Flute and will also appear as an ensemble member in Turandot.
Sophie studied at the University of Technology Sydney, graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts (journalism). She went on to further her studies, graduating with a Diploma of Education from Macquarie University (2001) and a Diploma of Music (Voice) from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (2004).
Her performances in Queensland Conservatorium productions include the roles of His Mother and The Dragonfly in L’enfant et les sortileges, Mistress page in Falstaff, Florence Pike in Albert Herring and Third Lady in Die Zauberflote. She has also performed as an ensemble member in productions of Madama Butterfly (for Opera Queensland) and The Magic Flute (for West Australian Opera).
On the concert platform, Sophie has performed as a soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah (with the Noosa Chorale and Sinfonia), Handel’s Messiah (with the Noosa Chorale), the Mozart Effect (with the Queensland Choir), Mozart’s Vespers K339 (with the Musica Antiqua Collegii), Beethoven’s Mass in C (with the Brisbane Concert Choir) and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony (with the Brisbane Sinfonia and Noosa Chorale).
Sophie also has extensive experience as a teacher. She has taught Singing at Corpus Christi College and Grace Lutheran College, English at Sydney Grammar School and Asquith Girls’ High School and French at Castle Hill High School. She speaks French and has also studied Italian and German.
